Created by portal company Sina, Sina Weibo was launched in August 2009, and currently has 140 million users, planning to catch up to Twitter’s 200 million. Weibo has a 56 percent share of China’s microblogging market, and includes more features than Twitter, such as polling and groups.
It should be interesting to see how Sina Weibo will put in place mandatory Chinese censorship regulations to its service in other countries, especially those that are protected by Internet freedom laws.
Earlier this year, Sina announced it was planning to monetize the service. Last month, it introduced an English version of its iPhone app, TheNextWeb reported.
