Facebook to open up news feeds to more ads

Facebook Inc. is planning to reverse its filtering of content on news feeds in order to insert more advertisements, notices and marketing messages under the guise of “likes,” the Wall Street Journal reported today.

Facebook’s algorithms don’t display things people aren’t interested in and don’t show everything that is shared, which limits how much impact advertisers’ campaigns have. Expanding the information appearing in news feeds addresses advertisers’ problem.

The updated news feeds will also give marketers more data about users, the Silicon Valley and San Jose Business Journal reported.

Changes are expected to be rolled out in the spring.
